2013 All-Ireland final hero Domhnall O'Donovan steps down from Clare panel

The corner-back has cited work commitments for his decision.

IN SEPTEMBER 2013, when it looked like Clare would fall just short of winning their fourth All-Ireland senior hurling title, an unlikely hero stepped forward in the shape of Domhnall O’Donovan.

The then-unheralded corner-back fired home the equalising point in stoppage time, sending the game to a replay before Davy Fitzgerald’s charges went on to lift the Liam MacCarthy at the second time of asking.

However, those heroics will not be repeated this year as O’Donovan has informed team-mates that he is stepping away from the panel this year because of work commitments.

A spokesperson for Clare GAA told The42 that O’Donovan — whose job is based in Dublin — informed Fitzgerald of the decision yesterday.

O’Donovan was originally named on the 34-man panel in October but withdrew due to work commitments before the Munster Senior League, though management had left the door open to a possible return.

Clare have won both their opening Allianz National Hurling League Division 1B games this season but don’t play again until they travel to Laois on 5 March.
